Relevance and recency

Coming soon

This feature is built but not yet available in SciNodes. Details may change.

In short: When it launches, every publication in a project will carry two scores. Relevance grows each time a project member works with the publication, for example opening it, filing it or highlighting it. Recency shows how recently anyone did, fading by half every 30 days. Both are team scores, shared by everyone in the project, and only project members will see them.

How relevance will work

Relevance is a running total. Each interaction adds points, and the total only goes up.

What a project member doesPoints added
Adds the publication on purpose, for example by DOI, from a reference file, or by copying it from another project1
The publication arrives in a batch, for example from a catalog search, a seed or corpus expansion, or adding cited publications from a map node0.5
Files it into one of their folders2
Opens its details1
Opens its PDF1.5
Annotates it: writes a note about it, highlights it, or adds it (or a quote from it) to Research in Formation3
Comments on it: a PDF comment, or comment evidence in Research in Formation3

These weights are placeholders and may change before launch. A change would affect only points added afterwards.

Example

You add a publication by DOI (1 point), open its details (1), open its PDF (1.5) and highlight a passage (3). Its relevance in the project is 6.5. If a teammate then files it into a folder (2), it rises to 8.5.

How recency will work

Recency measures how long ago anyone last interacted with the publication. It's worked out when you look at it, using the formula 2^(−days since last interaction ÷ 30), so it halves every 30 days.

Last interactionRecency
Today1.0
30 days ago0.5
60 days ago0.25
90 days ago0.125

Any of the interactions in the relevance table resets recency to 1.0.

Team scores

  • Per project. Scores belong to the project, not to one person. Every member's activity counts toward the same scores.
  • Separate projects, separate scores. Using a publication in one project doesn't change its scores in another.
  • Members only. Only members of the project will see its scores.
  • Kept on removal. If a publication is removed from the corpus, its scores are kept. Undoing the removal brings the publication back with its scores.

SciNodes already keeps track of when members last interacted with each publication, which these scores are built from. See Privacy and your data.

FAQ

Can a publication's relevance go down?

No. Relevance only increases. Recency is the score that fades over time.

Does opening the same publication several times count each time?

Yes. Each time someone opens its details or its PDF, points are added.

Can people outside the project see these scores?

No. Only project members will see them.

When will relevance and recency be available?

No date has been announced. This page will be updated when the scores appear in SciNodes.
