Map folders and properties

In short: In the Research Maps gallery, click New Folder in the left sidebar, type a name and press Enter. Drag map cards onto the folder, or right-click a card and choose Move to. Right-click a folder to Rename folder, Change icon or Delete folder. To edit a map's name or description, open the map and click Properties in the left sidebar. To delete it, click Delete map there.

Open the Research Maps tab to see the gallery. With a map open, click the Research Maps tab icon again to go back to the gallery.

  • Map cards show a preview, the name, the type and unit (for example "Co-authorship by Author") and a Slice badge if the map uses a corpus slice. Point at the badge to see the filters. Badges also mark maps that are building, failed or unsaved.
  • Folder tiles show the folder's icon, name and number of maps. Click one to open it. The path at the top ("All maps / folder") and the Back tile take you up again.
  • Unsaved drafts sit in their own section at the top. See Drafts and saving maps.
  • Search maps… appears when the project has more than 10 maps. It matches map names and map types.
  • "Looking for maps from another project?" links to your projects list.

Create a folder

  1. In the gallery, open the folder you want to create it in, or stay at All maps for the top level.
  2. Click New Folder in the left sidebar.
  3. Type a name and press Enter. Press Esc to cancel.

The new folder shows "Being created" for a moment. Folders are shared with everyone in the project.

Put maps in folders

  • Drag a map card onto a folder tile, or onto a folder name in the path at the top.
  • Or right-click a map card, click Move to, and pick a folder. Choose Unfile to take it out of all folders.
  • Drag a folder onto another folder to nest it.

Draft maps can't be filed until you save them. You can file only maps you created.

To stop cards being dragged by accident, click the padlock at the bottom of the left sidebar (tooltip "Lock maps so they can't be dragged between folders"). Click it again to unlock.

The map list in the left sidebar

With a map open, the left sidebar lists the project's maps. Click one to switch.

  • Right-click a map for Rename, Save map, Move up and Move down.
  • Drag a map to a new position, or select it and press Alt + ↑ or Alt + ↓.

Map Properties

  1. Open the map.
  2. Click Properties in the left sidebar, under the map controls.
  3. Edit the Name or Description.
  4. Click Save changes. You see "Map updated."

The dialog also shows the map's Type, Unit of analysis, Created date and Corpus slice ("Whole corpus" if no slice was used). These can't be changed. A Reconfigure map… link is shown for changing a built map's settings, but it isn't available yet (coming soon). To change settings today, build a new map in Expert Mode.

Delete a map

  1. Open the map.
  2. Click Delete map (bin icon) in the left sidebar.
  3. Read "Delete this map?". The button counts down for 5 seconds.
  4. Click Delete map. You see "Deleted “name”."

You can also right-click a map card in the gallery and choose Delete map. Deleting removes the map's nodes, edges and layout and can't be undone. Your corpus is not affected.

Troubleshooting

  • "Map name cannot be empty." Type a name before saving.
  • "Only the user who generated this map can edit it.", "…can rename it." or "…can delete it." Only a map's creator can change it. Ask them, or build your own copy.
  • "This map no longer exists." Someone deleted it. Go back to the gallery.
  • "A folder named “name” already exists here." Choose a different name.
  • I can't drag a map. Check the padlock at the bottom of the left sidebar, and save the map first if it's a draft.

FAQ

Can collaborators see my folders?

Yes. Map folders are shared with all project members. Each member can file only the maps they created.

Does deleting a folder delete its maps?

No. Maps inside move out of the folder. Only the folder and its subfolders are deleted.

Can I change a map's type or settings after building it?

Not yet. You can edit its name and description in Map Properties. To change type, unit or other settings, build a new map.

Can I move a map to another project?

No. Maps belong to their project. You can import publications from another project and build the same map there.
