Folders
In short: Every project has a permanent folder called My references for the publications you've chosen to keep, and you can add your own folders under Folders in the Library sidebar. A publication can sit in several folders at once. Filing, moving or unfiling never changes the corpus. Only Remove from corpus takes a publication out of the project, and that can't be undone.
Corpus, My references and folders
| What it is | |
|---|---|
| Corpus | Every publication in the project. Maps and assistants work over it. |
| My references | A permanent folder for the publications you've saved. It can't be deleted. |
| Your folders | Folders you create, for example "Include", "Exclude" and "Maybe" for screening |
Folders, including My references, are private: on a shared project, each member has their own.
Click a folder in the sidebar to see only its publications. To see the whole corpus again, clear any selection and click Corpus at the bottom of the details panel.
Create, rename and delete folders
- Open the project's Library tab.
- Click the New Folder button next to Folders in the sidebar.
- Type a name and press
Enter.
To rename or delete a folder, click its Folder actions button (or right-click it) and choose Rename or Delete. Deleting asks "Delete this folder?" and warns that it can't be undone. Click Delete folder. The publications in it stay in the corpus and in any other folders.
File publications in folders
Any of these works:
- Drag a publication, or a selection of publications, onto a folder in the sidebar.
- Row menu: click a publication's ⋯ button (or right-click the row) and choose Copy to folder, then pick a folder.
- Selection panel: select several publications, then click Copy to folder in the panel on the right.
- Details panel: open a publication and click Add to folder under "Folders and organization".
When you're viewing one of your own folders, the same commands read Move to folder (or Move / add to folder in the row menu). Moving asks what you want:
| Choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Move to "folder" | Removes it from the current folder and files it in the new one |
| Keep in both | Adds it to the new folder and leaves it in the current one |
Take publications out
| Action | Where | What happens | Undo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove from "folder" | Selection panel, while viewing that folder; or the remove button on a folder chip in the details panel | Unfiled from that folder only. Stays in the corpus. | File it again |
| Unsave | Row menu or selection panel | Leaves My references. Stays in the corpus and can be saved again from a research map. | Save it again |
| Remove from corpus | Selection panel | Removed from the project's corpus and unfiled from every folder | Can't be undone |
Remove from corpus asks "Remove from corpus?" first. Click Remove to confirm.
Automatic saving to My references
By default, SciNodes files a publication into My references when you:
- write a note about it
- add it to Research in Formation
- fetch its PDF
- upload a PDF for it
To change this, open the account menu → User Preferences → Autosave publications and untick the actions you don't want. See Preferences.
Saving a publication from the Suggested for your library card also files it in My references.
Tips
- The Publications count on the Overview tab is the number of publications in My references.
- You can build a map from just one folder. Add a Corpus folder filter to a corpus slice in Expert Mode.
- For screening in a review, create "Include", "Exclude" and "Maybe" folders and drag publications as you read.
Troubleshooting
- "A folder named "…" already exists." Choose a different name.
- "No folders yet — create one in the sidebar." You tried to file publications before creating a folder. Click New Folder first.
- "No publications in folder yet. You can save them here from your research maps." The folder is empty. File publications into it from the corpus.
- I can't delete My references. It's permanent. You can delete only your own folders.
FAQ
Can a publication be in more than one folder?
Yes. Use Keep in both when moving, or file it into several folders from the details panel.
Does deleting a folder delete its publications?
No. Only the folder goes. Its publications stay in the corpus.
What's the difference between Unsave and Remove from corpus?
Unsave only takes a publication out of My references. Remove from corpus takes it out of the project entirely and can't be undone.
Can collaborators see my folders?
No. Folders, including My references, are private to you. Each member of a shared project has their own. The corpus itself is shared, so Remove from corpus affects every member. See Collaboration.
