Adding publications
In short: Open a project's Library tab and click Add Publications in the sidebar. Choose Upload Anything to drop in PDFs or reference exports, Manual Entry to add one publication by DOI or by hand, Import Existing to copy publications from another project, or Discover to have SciNodes suggest publications or to search the catalog yourself. You can also add publications from SciVerse with Add to SciNodes.
Steps
- Open the project and click the Library tab.
- In the sidebar, click Add Publications. A menu replaces the folder list.
- Click the option you want (see the table below).
- To close the menu and go back to your folders, click its close button.
Which option to use
| Option | Use it when | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Upload Anything | You have PDFs, a reference export (RIS, BibTeX and more), a spreadsheet, a ZIP or a whole folder | Uploading files |
| Manual Entry | You want to add one publication, ideally by DOI | Manual entry |
| Import Existing | The publications are already in another of your projects | Import from another project |
| Discover | You want SciNodes AI to suggest publications (Suggest Publications) or you want to search the catalog yourself (Custom Search) | Discover and Suggest |
| Add to SciNodes in SciVerse | You found a publication while browsing SciVerse | Add to SciNodes |
The menu also has What can I upload?, a one-page summary of these options, and Learn More, which opens SciNodes Academy.
Where new publications go
Every option adds publications to the project's corpus, the set of publications your maps and assistants work over. Some options also let you file them in My references, your project's main folder:
| Option | Destination |
|---|---|
| Upload Anything, Manual Entry | You choose under Add to: My references + corpus or Corpus only |
| Import Existing, Discover | Corpus |
| Add to SciNodes in SciVerse | "Added to My references ✓" |
Publications already in the corpus are skipped, so you never get duplicates. See Folders.
Other ways the corpus grows
- When you create a project: Suggest, Discover, your own files or another project. See Creating projects.
- From a map: on citation and co-citation maps, add a publication's cited or citing publications to the corpus. See Corpus expansion.
- Suggested for your library: a card above the list offers top-ranked publications from the project's first search, one at a time.
- Expand corpus in Expert Mode: re-run an earlier search or run a new one. See Expert Mode.
Tips
- If the corpus is empty, the Library tab opens straight on the upload drop zone.
- The DOI is the most reliable way to add a single publication. It lets SciNodes remove duplicates and link citations.
- Uploading files with catalog lookups, Suggest, Discover, and corpus expansion use your weekly AI credits. See Credits and usage.
Troubleshooting
- "Open a project before adding publications." You're not inside a project. Open one first.
- A "Coming soon" page after using the Suggest me publications link under the upload drop zone. That shortcut isn't available yet. Use Add Publications → Discover → Suggest Publications instead.
- "Nothing new to import — every matching publication is already in this corpus." Everything you tried to add was already there.
FAQ
Is there a limit on how many publications a project can hold?
There's no fixed limit on corpus size. Each method has its own per-run limit, listed on its page. Very large maps need more memory. See System requirements.
Will adding the same publication twice create a duplicate?
No. Publications already in the corpus are recognized and skipped.
What's the difference between the corpus and My references?
The corpus is everything the project works over. My references is a folder for the publications you've chosen to keep. See Folders.
Can I add publications to a project someone shared with me?
Only if you're an Editor. Viewers have read-only access. See Collaboration.
